2010 Round-up

I just thought I’d round up all the “mistrust” highs and lows of 2011 – more a way of documenting what’s gone on music-wise for me than anything else. It’s not a massive list, but following the advice of Jasper from Dubmission Records, I tried to make 2010 a better year than 2009….

So, what happened in 2010?

I was asked to do another remix for Dubmission Records late last year (2009) and didn’t think it would get an official release. This was a remix of International Observer’s Popcorn Slavery, which was taken from his album “Felt”. It looked like the track wouldn’t make it onto the Popcorn Slavery EP, mainly because I guess it wasn’t as upbeat as the one I did for Pitch Black (Rude Mechanicals) a few months previously, but it finally came out at the end of February (2010).  The EP is still available on International Observer’s Bandcamp page. My remix of International Observer’s Popcorn Slavery was also released on the Waveform Transmissions 3 compilation album in September. This was the first time I’ve had a track licensed to another record label (Dubmission Records released the original EP that my remix was on. Psyreviews gave my remix a great write-up! One of my other remixes, Deep Space Lament, which I did for Animat, was released on another compilation. Earplay – The Remixes was also released in September. You can still download the album from Amazon and other download stores. Read more here….

I finally got interviewed on the radio in 2010! Chorlton Arts Radio featured 3 of my tracks and interviewed me about them on their Friday night show. Chorlton Arts Radio was part of the Chorlton Arts Festival in Manchester (UK). What a nerve-racking evening. You can read more about the interview and listen to the interview with all my ummms and aaaahs here…

Another remix for Dubmission: This time I was asked to remix a track by Warp Technique. I was given the choice of two tracks from their latest album to remix, and I decided on one called “Nowhere Dub”, as it seemed like there was a lot of stuff going on in the original track and I could really get something from it but still put my own mark on it. The end of July was the deadline to send it off to the label, and it looked like it would be released on an EP fairly soon after. However, it’s been delayed, and it may come out early in 2011….

I decided to send one of my own tracks to Future Music magazine in July. Don’t ask me why, as I’m not too pushy when it comes to my own music. It was a quirky tune that started off with the title “Begby”, and sounded a bit off-key at first. To my complete surprise, “Begby”, now with the new title “Half Past One”, was chosen by Future Music’s editor to go on the cover disc and be one of their readers’ featured demo tracks in the next month’s edition.  Read more about the demo of the month feature.

I also did two more remixes in 2010, both for upcoming Manchester bands. I did one for Humanizer’s “The Manifesto is Over” and “Sway” for Maliika. Just after I’d finished the remix for Humanizer, they signed for Peter Hook’s Hacienda Records, so hopefully they’ll let me do some more remixes for them in 2011! You can listen to “The Manifesto is Over” on my Soundcloud page, but I’m not sure if “Sway” will see the light of day, as Maliika seem to be taking a break from recording and I was asked not to release my remix for the time being…

I guess one of the musical lows of 2010 is that, once again, I didn’t get to play live. I started the year with a plan to put together a set of some of my own tunes and a couple of remixes, but domestic life took over with several things getting in the way of any planning… Maybe I’l get sorted in 2010.

And finally, I’ve made a few new friends and got a load more followers on websites like Facebook and Soundcloud, so hello to you all, and many thanks for the support and enthusiasm! All in all, 2010 has been a pretty good year, music-wise, and hopefully I can build on that in 2011….

Happy New Year…and why not listen to the rest of my tracks on Soundcloud, or follow me on Facebook and Twitter!
